The electrification of transport is a key lever for delivering zero emissions and realising ambitions to decarbonise transport. We have recognised the need to support the testing, research and demonstration of low carbon transport solutions and services to assist the UK industry in meeting the economy-wide Net Zero target.

PNDC’s expertise in this area includes smart charging strategies and control techniques, grid integration of EV charging, energy storage system technologies and energy data analysis and management.

Currently, we are implementing plans to grow our capabilities and develop our facilities in support of electrification and future transport technology, to simulate and provide real-world validation of the wide range of critical functionalities required for all areas of transport decarbonisation.

Through investment, strategic partnerships and cross-sector collaboration, PNDC is involved in innovation projects including:

The decarbonisation of heavy-duty vehicles through battery electrification and charging technology. Developed by the Scottish Government in partnership with PNDC and the Hydrogen Accelerator at the University of St Andrews, the project focuses on accelerating the low carbon economy and local mobility supply chain growth.

A project to improve the performance and reliability of Electric Vehicle (EV) charge points, the Assure Charge project, was recently launched following the successful award of a collaborative bid with EV charging experts Connected Kerb and research and testing facility PNDC.

DER-IC Scotland, high power integrated electrical propulsion and powertrain accelerator supporting development, manufacturing and testing of Megawatt (MW) scale PEMD for high power applications in Transport (Marine, Aerospace, Off-Highway, Rail and Truck/Bus) and Energy through expansion of the existing multi-MW power hardware in the loop testing capability at PNDC.


The Climate Change Committee reports that surface transport is currently the largest emitting sector of the UK economy, at 23%, and we need to reduce emissions from this sector, 90% by 2050, to meet the economy-wide Net Zero target.

PNDC has significantly grown its portfolio of projects in low carbon transport R&D over the last 2 years and is committed to supporting UK industry with testing, research and demonstration in this space.
