The successful candidate will undertake specific research and development projects to support PNDC’s innovation activities in Digital Grids, with particular focus on design, integration and testing. Under the guidance of the PNDC leadership team, providing regular updates and reports for industrial partners, and thus supporting the Centre objectives and targets.

The postholder will also develop project plans for consideration by industrial partners and clients as well as research proposals for geared funding. Through engaging in relevant professional and knowledge exchange activities, the successful candidate will support PNDC’s external profile and technical leadership.

Research and Development Engineer (Digital Substation) (ref: 573493)

Our Digital Substation innovation area aims to lead industry stakeholders into the next generation of distribution network substations, enabling greater integration of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) and customer participation, underpinned by high-fidelity substation data, secure and resilient communication architectures, and intelligent monitoring, control, and protection functions.

The development of PNDC’s Digital Substation lab is a testament to our commitment to innovation. Equipped with edge computing and the latest networking equipment, it provides functional and performance testing tools that accelerate the modernisation of the distribution grid and enable the transition into new digital substation architectures.

The successful candidate will work as part of a growing, dynamic R&D team on various technical projects, with particular emphasis on experimental validation and testing. Opportunities for innovation are extensive through the strong working relationships and routes to market afforded by PNDC industry members, supplemented with collaborative opportunities with other research and industry teams in the UK and abroad.

Research & Development Engineer (Protection, Automation and Control) (ref: 573823)

Our Protection and Control innovation theme is dedicated to tackling significant challenges, such as the coordination of network protection and the protection of distributed energy resources (including energy storage). These challenges require advanced research, development, and demonstration, all of which are supported by PNDC’s modelling expertise, Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS), and specialised testing tools.

This is a brand-new and exciting role within PNDC that will research, develop, test and demonstrate protection, automation and control technologies as part of the PNDC R&D Team, in its unique, world-class industry-scale facility.

Senior Engineering Manager (ref: 600518)

Salary range: £57,696 – £64,914

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Engineering Manager to provide technical leadership at our new ‘Whole Energy’ (electrical, thermal, gas and transportation) research facility at Inchinnan and support our existing technical team at our research and test facility in Cumbernauld. Preferably a chartered engineer with Senior Authorised Person (SAP) experience, this position will interest someone with an engineering background; ideally from a petrochemical or process manufacturing industry or perhaps a DNO (distribution network operator).

You will have a solid background in LV/HV networks having been a Senior Authorised Person (SAP) in a previous role. In the role you will lead upgrades and maintenance activities for all centre infrastructure, plant and equipment, designing and implementing policy and procedures relevant to the safe deployment, operation & maintenance of the testing facilities.
