What’s it really like to work as an R&D engineer?
During summer 2026, two senior pupils found out first-hand. Through the SSERC Learner Research Placement Programme, PNDC welcomed them for a fortnight to work alongside our senior R&D engineers, gaining insight into engineering careers and into how academia and industry work together to accelerate net zero innovation.
For Sujitha, S6 at Williamwood High School, the fortnight brought clarity: “Before this research placement, I was quite unsure what I wanted to do.” Two weeks later, the direction was clearer.
Research placements are real-life workplace experiences that put talented learners at the heart of a UK host organisation, applying what they’ve learned at school while contributing to the work of researchers and industry professionals. Learners collaborate with a STEM expert on a live research question, and are supported by a mentor throughout. SSERC’s new research placement programme is backed by investment from industry partner Ocean Winds, and supported by the established Research Placements and Experiences Programme from STEM Learning.
