Voltempo, the Birmingham-based advanced electric heavy goods vehicle (eHGV) charging solutions specialist, has welcomed the launch of the University of Strathclyde’s new Advanced Net Zero Innovation Centre (ANZIC), a state-of-the-art research and development facility designed to accelerate the UK’s clean energy transition. Voltempo is proud to have been the first industry partner to use the centre, carrying out innovative trials of its HyperCharger technology.
Showcasing British innovation, the HyperCharger is designed and manufactured at Voltempo’s Tysley Energy Park facility. It represents the next generation of electric vehicle Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) created to meet the demanding needs of Electric Heavy Goods Vehicles (eHGVs) and commercial fleets. Scalable and modular, the HyperCharger can deliver over 1 MVA of power, enabling rapid, simultaneous charging for up to 24 vehicles.
Voltempo’s early trials at ANZIC showcased the facility’s unique ability to emulate real-world grid and fleet conditions, providing invaluable insights into charger efficiency, thermal performance, and harmonic impact in a controlled environment. By circulating power within the test network rather than dissipating it into a load, the trials demonstrated ANZIC’s capability to support rigorous, data-rich testing without the limitations of vehicle batteries.
The collaboration between Voltempo, PNDC and the University of Strathclyde illustrates how innovation hubs like ANZIC are enabling UK companies to de-risk and deploy transformative energy and transport solutions. By being the first industry partner to use the facility, Voltempo helped demonstrate the vital role ANZIC will play in bringing net zero technologies from concept to commercialisation.
Being the first company to trial at the Advanced Net Zero Innovation Centre was a privilege and a clear demonstration of the importance of collaboration between industry and academia. The work we carried out with PNDC and Strathclyde provided a vital early step in validating our HyperCharger technology. Since then, we’ve made massive progress and are now focused on delivering this innovation to our clients as part of the UK’s largest HGV-only EV charging network. We remain fully committed to supporting the University and ANZIC as they continue to play a central role in the UK’s transition to net zero.
