Whole Energy System Accelerator (WESA)

WESA is a world-first test-and-evaluation facility that links real consumer behaviour from Energy Systems Catapult’s Living Lab with a high-fidelity grid simulator and PNDC’s physical 11 kV test network—creating a real-time, bidirectional loop where simulated worlds interact with real hardware for rigorous, realistic validation. PNDC delivered the Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) capability, integrating the physical testbed, simulation environment and Living Lab data to create a PHIL-enabled sandbox for testing commercial and regulatory propositions.

Partnership, impact and responsibility

Alongside its work on WESA, PNDC contributed to the Load Managed Areas (LMA) project with SSEN Distribution (part of SSE plc), providing valuable insight into distribution networks and their evolving challenges under future energy scenarios. Together, these efforts accelerate innovation and de-risk solutions on the path to net zero, generating robust evidence to inform commercial models and regulation. WESA’s development also prioritises open, responsible practices and strict UK privacy compliance—underscoring a commitment to openness, knowledge sharing and transparency.

Warm congratulations to all collaborators, whose expertise and commitment continue to advance research and knowledge exchange in the energy sector.
